Windows / VMWare Administrator
Current Situation:
The role of the Windows / VMWare Admins, today, include a) Windows administration hdw and sfw), b ) VMWare administration (hdw and sfw), c) production support of existing applications, hardware, software, d) installation of hardware and software for new projects, e) Active Directory / DNS / DHCP administration, f) CIFS administration, g) troubleshooting of problem tickets, h) remediation of Windows (server and workstation) security vulnerabilities, i) Anti-Virus patching, and j) research and design of new technologies to improve the CHI-SLH compute / storage infrastructure. Today, four individuals perform these functions. Four individuals is not enough, and a) some of these functions either are not being performed, except on a reactionary basis, or b) are not being performed completely. Also, because of the lack of staff supporting the Storage infrastructure, some of these four Windows admins are pulling double duty to support the storage infrastructure (we are pursuing staffing / contractors to alleviate some of this pressure). The activities not being performed (or insufficiently being performed), today, by CHI-SLH staff, are the security vulnerability remediations (totally performed by contractors, with one contractor reporting to manager, and managing the work of the other three), research and design of new technologies, and storage administration. Also, inhouse technical experience for some of the infrastructure support and troubleshooting needs is lacking.
Position Expectations:
The primary focus of this role is to manage the Windows and VMWare infrastructures. This includes building and managing the hardware for a physical server installation, including coordinating getting it connected to the network, and SAN if needed. This also includes installing the HP chassis / blades for the VMWare infrastructure, including coordinating getting it connected to the network and SAN, installing the vSphere software, configuring the data stores, and building VM templates, and servers from templates. Understanding the chassis / blade hardware configuration and ethernet / SAN connectivity is required. Also required are the skills for a) production support of existing applications, hardware, software, b) Active Directory / DNS / DHCP administration, c) troubleshooting of problem tickets, d) remediation of Windows server security vulnerabilities, e) research and design of new technologies to improve the CHI-SLH compute / storage infrastructure, and f) monitoring of the Windows and VM resource utilizations for capacity planning, for performance and budget purposes.
The primary server infrastructure is Dell (R710-R730) and HP (DL380) servers, HP C7000 chassis and Gen8/9 blades, Windows 2008-R2 and higher, and VM 5.1 and higher.
Knowledge of, and the ability to support, CIFS shares and Symantec Anti-Virus patching, is a definite plus.
Also, knowledge of EMC VMAX and Pure Storage configurations, and use for a Windows / VMware SAN environment, will be useful.
Thanks & Regards
Raj Kant
